和教授联系的一些体会和收获，以及SP的写法，分享

本科天津大学 GPA：85/100，专业90，rank：3/67
本科毕业一篇中文论文第三作者，不提也罢，垃圾。
香港大学在读硕士：已经有一篇SCI第一作者。马上第二篇，估计不是top journal也不会太差，第一作者。第三篇完成40%，第一作者吧，应该是很好的journal。
我给教授写信有下面几个points，
1. briefly introduce yourself, 如果你的导师牛的话，可以告诉他你是谁的学生。
2. 简单地介绍你的研究，并表达对他的研究的兴趣，这个过程需要对他的研究背景做一些research，这就是我为什么说matching很重要，如果你真的读过他的文章，或者在你的论文里引用过他的文章，写出来。
3. 问他今年有没有钱，这个没什么不好问得，他们也很理解，没钱你申他干嘛。
4. 表示感谢，期待他的回复。
5. 附上你的CV，只列出和研究相关的，别把什么兴趣爱好都付上，没人看。推荐转成pdf格式。如果是帅哥或美女可以贴上照片^_^。
如果他看了你的CV感兴趣的话，会给你回信的。
申请的名单：MIT, UC Berkeley, Stanford, Cornell, Wisconsin-Madision,
如下为这几个大学的回信。
UC Berkeley我同时联系了两个教授，他们都给我回信了，由于他们是一个group，而且有很多project是共同申请的，所以我觉得没什么不妥。
第一个教授的回信，巨长的一封mail，老师很负责

Thank you for your interest in my research program at UC Berkeley. While I
have worked with a student on XXX. It sounds like you have access to some very nice equipment for such studies that I do not possess. The former student, Professor XXX, is on the faculty of XXX.
Some of my research is still related to XXX（我的topic），接着是他的research interest。
I would encourage your application to the Berkeley XXX program, but I would like to express some caution. Our admission requirements for students with masters degrees from other institutions are more rigorous since we use the MS degree to screen our students for the PhD program. In addition, students arriving with a masters degree still need to pass a few examinations that slow down their progress, and there needs to be an adviser identified prior to admission. That being said, all of my current PhD students have masters degrees from other institutions, thus it is possible.
I hope this helps clarify a little on my research directions

Thanks for your interest in my research program -- your background and interests are quite well suited to my group. It is really too early to tell right now what the funding situation will be next fall. I have one proposal that is pending, and I have several others that I am working on. I would encourage you to apply for the program and we can see where the funding situation stands as we get further along the process.

Your GRE scores and student standing are very impressive, and I encourage you to apply to our program for September 2006. I do not know at this time if I will have funding for a new student, but most likely I will take on one new student next year. The project will involve laboratory experimentation to study the XXX. 此外，Wisconsin-Madison的教授已经肯定说给我offer了，并且说我可以到那里选择我最感兴趣的课题，条件给的很优厚。所以有他保底，可以放手去拼那些大牛了。
到现在Stanford还没有给我回信，估计他对我不感兴趣。个人觉得这个学校太牛，最自己的条件不是很自信就不用浪费美金了。
而且我觉得在和教授联系时要把精力放在学术交流上，也就是research，表现出想去他那的愿望是正常的，但不要太过，不要太功利。那些教授用手想也能想明白你想去他那。
另外，方向的match非常重要，像berkely那个department网站上也说得很明白。
以下是我写我自己的statement of purpose的一些经验和感悟，希望对大家的申请有帮助。

Though there is no one formula for preparing a successful personal statement, there are some minimum key ingredients. Explain your personal preparation for graduate studies, including: courses of interest; research experience; reason(s) for choosing this field; and distinguishing personal characteristics. In addition, state your short-term and long-term goals as they pertain to this application.
Once you prepare a draft, be sure to have your personal statement reviewed by an editor. This person can either be a professional, a faculty member, administrator, or trusted friend. Whomever you choose, make sure that you are comfortable with their knowledge of the field, and their ability to carefully edit your statement.

由此你可以看到，这个东西就是写你自己的经历，选择一些你学习中，工作中的经历来写。　大家比较容易犯的错误就是写的空泛。我看过最多的例子就是在有些同学的ＳＰ中有很多例如 excellent, outstanding, perfect等等的词，其实这些词我觉得不应该是自己描述自己的，应该是别人来评价你的。你说你自己outstanding，但那些professor从你的ＳＰ中根本看不到你到底哪里outstanding。你要用实例告诉他你outstanding，不要空喊。
ＳＰ其实是对你自己学习和工作的回顾和总结，如果你真正的深入到你的研究中（这里我特指研究生），那就在你的ＳＰ中介绍你做过的事情，克服了什么苦难，取得了什么成就，那些使你更加成熟，那些使你决定去读ＰｈＤ。
另外，应该找一些关于美国graduate study的书，特指教育方面的，从中你可以真正的了解美国的ＰｈＤ，他们要什么样的人，他们欣赏哪一点。千万不要去臆测那些大学的喜好，也不要完全相信网上所流传的。你没到过美国，根本不知道那到底什么样。只有通过美国人写的东西去了解第一手资料。但是，在这里我要强调，千万别了解的太深了，当你完全了解美国的ＰｈＤ教育，你会感到很恐怖。我就有一度不敢再度ＰｈＤ了。（玩笑了）但你真正要明白的是，美国人的ＰｈＤ是为了将来做academic工作的，不是为其他准备的。所以在你申请之前，你要想清楚你要不要花５－６年去完成这个ＰｈＤ。
另外在你的ＳＰ中，千万别写的太幼稚了，尤其对研究生同学。你对这个领域发生兴趣是来自于你的研究工作，而不是什么高中或小学的什么经历。我曾看过一个同学写道ＰＳ，里面他写道他对环境工程的兴趣来自于害怕有一天由于水资源紧缺导致第三次世界大战。我相信那些教授根本不关心打不打仗，只关心你能不能做research。
ＳＰ就是telling a story，不要总想写得多有传奇色彩，不可能。从小事中发掘你的闪光点才是真的。另外，千万不要去网上找什么模版，你用别人也用，到时大家千人一面。估计那帮教授看的都想吐。
把自己的闪光点写下来，用实例去support，才最让人信服。
自己的感悟，本想等申请结束后再写的，觉得现在写出来可能会给申２００６的同学一些idea。可能会有一些观点大家不赞同，那出来大家讨论吧。
