personal statement that is an important part of the AMCAS application. Now =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

is the time to start to think about what you want to include in the =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

statement. Here are my thoughts. =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

I often am asked what is the question that applicants are to address in the =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
statement. The printed directions are vague and general. To me, the =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
question is this: "Who are you who wants to be a physician?" From this =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
broad question one may next ask about what the schools are looking for in =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
applicants. I constantly refer to UCSF's general but wonderful statement =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
that "successful applicants tend to have strong academic records, firm and =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
clear motivation as reflected in their work experience, activities and =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
interests, and outstanding personal qualities." I have tried to explain the =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯

academic records than numbers. Intellectual abilities shown through =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

research and other academic interests are examples. Firm and clear =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

motivation means "a helping, caring person who knows what he or she is =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

getting into from having explored the field." The helping and caring can be =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
shown in any number of ways and not just through medically related work. But =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
don't forget that the schools want to know that applicants have explored =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
their intended field. Outstanding personal qualities include the personal =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
traits we look for in physicians. The schools seek interesting and =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
accomplished people. While this too is vague, we all know interesting and =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
accomplished people whether they be athletes, musicians, leaders, poets, or =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
artists and many others good at something worthwhile. =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
What's next? Keeping in mind what the schools are looking for what is it =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
that you want them to know about you? What have you done that makes you fit =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
the broad general framework of what the schools seek in applicants? Make =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
some notes to yourself and start to refine them. What is the evidence that =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
you, for example, are a helping and caring person? Note that I said =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
evidence. In the statement you want to write about what you have done in a =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
way that allows the reader to draw a conclusion about you. You do not want =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
to say, " My volunteer work shows I am helping and caring." You want the =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
reader to draw that conclusion, but you want the evidence to reveal it. You =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
do not want to tell the reader what the evidence means. It is showing and =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
not telling. You can say this experience made me realize something but =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
don't tell them what it shows them; let the reader draw that conclusion =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
based on your clear description of the situation. =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
While you could discuss only one topic in the one page statement, most =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
applicants write about 3-4. Too many topics turn the statement into a =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
list--not a good idea. Clearly then, the topics you choose to write about =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
are very important and deserve considerable thought. =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
Here are some common problems that I see in the large number of statements I =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

rewarding." What does that mean? Speaking of research--don't write about =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

it as you would in an abstract or science report. We care about you and not =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

that cells do this or that when exposed to something or other and this has =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

implications for some medical advance. What can we learn about you from =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
your research? That is the purpose. Don't tell them what physicians are or =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
should be. The readers already know and are not looking for you to inform =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
them. Again, they want to know how you match up with what they think is =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
iÕ¯
important in a physician(UCSF's statement). The personal statement is all =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

about you. The statement is not an essay on medicine or the state of the =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

world. Don't be modest or boastful-reveal yourself honestly and positively. =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ

You are your own salesperson. If you don't show them who you are nobody else =&dot¢¨sÜR+2bbs.eduglobal.comæ
