Univ. of Washington šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
My interest in science dates back to my early childhood. šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
I have always excelled in physical sciences and have received šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
numerous awards in mathematics in high school. At age 16, šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
I attended National Taiwan University (NTU), majoring physics. šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
Four years of extensive study in physics and current work in šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
surface science inspired me to undertake a greater challenge šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
in pursuing a doctorate degree in physics. My aspiration to šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
be a research scientist also makes graduate study an absolute necessity. šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
As an undergraduate student, I specialized in physics, šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
mathematics, and computer science. In my junior year I studied šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
computational physics in Applied Mathematics III, during which šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
I developed a 2-dimensional Ising model with the finite size šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
effect as a course project. In addition to being elated by my computer šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
simulated phase transition phenomena, I was also pleased with the šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
computed values of the critical exponents which closely agreed with šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
theoretical values. During the two-year course on the fundamentals of šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
experimental physics, I diligently studied the techniques of operating šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
experimental equipment, such as the epitaxy systems, lithography, and computer šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
controlled data acquisition interfaces. I enjoyed these hand-on experiences šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
immensely. My current duty, as a research assistant, is to set up diamond film šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
growth kinetics experiments which is designed to verify whether the mechanism šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
of H atoms destroying C-H bonds in diamond film growth is the bottle-neck šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
reaction to diamond film formation. The results will give valuable insights šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
and better enhance the research efforts of another group here at IAMS. šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
In the mean time, I am learning about the scanning probe šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
microscopy, charged particle optics, energy analyzers and šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
many instruments used in surface science šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
through the seminars held in my group. šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
In order to be knowledgeable in the breadth of physics, I šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
attended workshops and symposiums in different fields. In the šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
symposium on Symmetries in Subatomic Physics, I worked as an šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
interpreter and edited the article "Conceptual Beginnings of šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
Various Symmetries in the Twentieth Century Physics" from Prof. šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
C. N. Frank Yang's speech and translated it into Chinese. šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
Keeping an open mind to get experiences not only in academics, šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
I actively participated in extracurricular activities while šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
attending NTU. In senior, I was a part-time teaching assistant grading šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
exams and answering questions in the courses, A Journey to Subatomic šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
World and From Quarks to Black Holes. I also šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
have a part-time position as the bulletin board system administrator for the šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
Physical Society of ROC. I am currently construct their WWW homepage šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
of IAMS (http://www.sinica.edu.tw/as/intro/atom.html) to improve šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
information exchange and science education in Taiwan. šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
Accumulating these valuable experiences, I am preparing šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
myself for a career in scientific research. Being exposed to šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
surface science, I am interested in mesoscopic systems and šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
nanostructure materials. I plan to concentrate on condensed šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
matter physics. Having carefully read the content of the šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
graduate studies and on-going research programs at University šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
of Washington at Seattle, I believe that UW is the best place šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
for me to be. I am confident that my diverse research experiences šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
together with a firm commitment to physics have merited me šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
to be qualified to undertake graduate study at University of šQyÁS Yøùbbs.eduglobal.comOI¯î@«¥@
Washington at Seattle.
