全美最热门的学位MFE——金融工程硕士

今年，当以往最受投资银行青睐的沃顿、芝加哥、哥伦比亚商学院的MBA们毕业的时候，这些天之骄子们却发现他们想进入投资银行工作的难度比往年大大增加了，除了因为经济不景气以外，还有一个主要原因是他们有了一个虽然年轻却很强大的对手——金融工程硕士，MFE（Master in Financial Engineering）！

到底什么是金融工程？笔者抱着疑惑通过E-mail咨询了毕业于加州伯克利大学哈斯商学院的刘华先生。刘华毕业于上海财经大学会计系，在某著名跨国公司作了几年财务工作后，发现自己并不喜欢这种工作，他想进入更具挑战性的金融领域。然而没有相关学历，想找到金融方面的工作谈何容易。于是，刘华打算申请MBA，在考完GMAT后，他发现加州伯克利大学哈斯商学院除了提供MBA学位外，还提供MFE金融工程硕士学位，而且只需一年即可获得学位。于是他抱着试一试的念头申请了MFE，为了增加自己的机会，他参加了GRE数学Sub考试。本来他没抱太大希望，没想到当年MBA申请竞争异常激烈，虽然他的GMAT成绩和工作背景都相当优秀，但他所申请的几所商学院MBA全都遭拒绝。而当收到伯克利大学MFE的录取通知的时候，他坦言惊讶大于欢喜。经过一年高强度的学习，再经过激烈的应聘竞争，虽然面临着经济不振的压力，刘华还是获得了美菱、摩根斯坦利、雷曼兄弟、所罗门史密斯等著名投资银行的青睐。刘华选择了在摩根斯坦利银行旧金山分部从事金融衍生物交易的工作。他说，虽然没能进入他最向往的高盛公司，他对现在的工作仍然十分满意，他坦言现在的工作是在一年多以前所不敢想象的。以下是笔者得到的关于金融工程的介绍。

金融工程在不同的大学有不同的名称：Financial Engineering， Financial Mathematics，Mathematical Finance，Computational Finance , 然而无论是叫金融工程，金融数学，数学金融还是计算金融，它们的实质都是一样的——it represents the emerging discipline wherein mathematical tools are used to model financial markets and solve problems in finance，即以数学工具来建立金融市场模型和解决金融问题的新兴学科。近年来，由于金融创新层出不穷，金融市场发展得越来越复杂，在以往传统的股票和债券上发展出了期货、期权等一系列新型投资工具，这就是通常所说的金融衍生物。而如何对这些金融衍生物进行定价，是投资银行所面临的一个难题。同时，由于金融投资工具的复杂化，一些基金管理公司越来越感到传统的投资方式难以保持基金的高成长率，他们需要设计出更加高级的投资组合来获得盈利。因此，他们大量需要那些既通晓金融市场又有数学应用能力的复合型人才，而这样的人才在市场上极为稀缺。金融工程就是为了培养这样的人才而产生的。金融工程是一门综合了金融学、数学和计算机科学的交叉学科，其课程通常由大学的商学院、数学系和工程学院联合授课，其课程由于集中于金融领域，所以深度远远超过MBA金融方面的课程，通常包括股票市场分析、投资组合分析、期货和期权、资产定价、资本预算、固定收益分析、利率模型、金融风险管理等课程。金融工程硕士的学习时间一般为全日制1年，同MBA一样，是一种职业教育（Professional Education）而非学术研究教育（Academic Research Education），因此无需撰写硕士论文。其全部课程均围绕金融学的应用展开，具有实用性很强的特点，最适合那些立志于从事金融工作的年轻人。在美国，持有金融工程硕士学位的人才在市场上炙手可热，基本上全部被各大投资银行、基金管理公司、保险公司、风险投资公司所聘用。

MFE和MBA有什么不同？MBA是一种泛面商科教育，而MFE则是专门培养高级金融人才的专项教育。金融工程硕士的课程全部集中于金融领域，如果你感兴趣的是会计、市场营销或人力资源管理，那你应该是去学习MBA课程，因为MBA的课程更广泛。此外，申请金融工程硕士不需要有工作经验，这和MBA有很大不同，但是，申请金融工程硕士要求申请者在大学本科必须修过两门课——微积分和统计，因此不适合那些大学学文科的人们。最后，MFE的学习是一年，而MBA由于课程覆盖面广而通常需要两年。

据笔者了解，现在，已经有不少美国大学开设了金融工程的课程，如加州伯克利大学、普林斯顿大学、斯坦福大学、芝加哥大学、哥伦比亚大学、康奈尔大学、密西根安阿伯大学、卡耐基梅隆大学、纽约大学、南加州大学等等。除美国外，有英国的牛津大学和爱丁堡大学，加拿大的多伦多大学和约克大学，等等。亚洲的国家中，新加坡作为东南亚金融中心走在了前列，新加坡国立大学和南洋理工学院都开设了相应的课程。更多的大学可以查看国际金融工程师联合会IAFE (International Association of Financial Engineers) 的网址，其中有各所开设MFE课程的大学的链接，网址是：[url]http://www.iafe.org/educate/fe_schools.ihtml[/url]

我在美国学MFE（金融工程）

看了“全美最热门的学位MFE——金融工程硕士”有点话想说。

首先，学商的人除了GMAT外，建议以去考GRE的SUB. 呵呵,俺现在就是FE的。数学学得极其痛苦，别的不说，单是国内学过的probability在这边就是按数学系的标准来上的。每堂课的作业有10题，呵呵，至少要做两天。下学期还有stochastic，statistics和numerator method。连金融都是mathematical finance，用的书是John Hull的Future, option and other derivatives，数学要求挺大的。刚来的第2个星期就有人转MBA了，俺也在考虑当中。另：就业也不见得好，经济形势一不好，什么都差，别听人瞎扯。

If you are admitted, you may be required to take something like: calculus (1-3), Linear Algebra. But few schools will admit you until you show them the ability in Math. Yes, my bachelor background is business, but I have taken most of those required courses before.

It is also very competitive to apply. Although some schools may require GMAT, most of others require GRE. And it is very important to get a high score in your undergraduate math: calculus, probability and linear algebra, or you had better take GRE math SUB to prove your ability. Though working experience is not required, it is recommended. And it is almost impossible to get scholarship.

就业目前还是不行,连个internship都只有80%的人能找到。美国的经济一不景气就什么都不行，当地人都找不到工作了，更何况是国际学生。今年有一个中国学生毕业，到现在还在找工作。

You guys may go to the official website of UC Berkley whose MFE is very top in USA, it says:" it is very hard to get a job for international student." By the way, this sentence has been there for 4 years!

But generally, MFE has competitive advantage over MBA, just because all business schools produce bunches of MBA, the number of MBA is far more than MFE. Also, MBA it very general, but MFE dig deeply into financial analysis.
