IN a special series, the Mercury profiles Tasmania's 50 finest homes. From buildings steeped in history to dazzling additions to our contemporary architecture, they are testaments to Tasmanian talent as well as simly wonderful places for those fortunate enough to reside in them.

1 + 2 Architecture Bruny Island House
When Hobart architects 1 + 2 Architecture were commissioned to draw up a design for a new off-the-grid Bruny Island home, they had never done anything so remote.
The site, down a rough 4WD track on the island's far southern end, required a building that would suit the surroundings: something natural and environmentally aware -- but architecturally remarkable.
The home is made up of two parallel pavilions linked by a central spine. Walls almost entirely of glass and a soaring concave curved roof let in sunlight and allow vast views of the bush and water.
This very special house has won several accolades nationally and internationally: it took the Royal Australian Institue of Architects Award 2004 adn is prominent in teh current Green House Exhibition at the National Building Museum Washington DC.

Avalon
This might just be the ultimate beach house. Perched high on a headland overlooking the East Coast's Greart Oyster Bay, Avalon is a light, bright structure that soars towards the view.
Built with a steel frame and acres of glass, this is an award-winning design by Tasmanian architect Craig Rosevear. Created by developer Brett Torosi and available to rent as a peaceful coastal retreat, this is the kind of place that makes you feel glamorous just being there.
The living area is spaciously open plan and there are amazingly panoramic views, even from the kitchen sink. And the pipnnalce of luxury: a bathtub of Huon Pine for soaking the day's cares away.

Stuart Tanner Pirates Bay House
This remarkable house at Pirates Bay on the Tasman Peninsula seems to defy gravity. Its glass and steel box projects lightly out of the hillside, floating above the young eucalypt forest that surrounds it.
Sreated by architect Stuart Tanner, the Pirates Bay house is a daring concept. The house touches the ground in only two places: at the very rear where its footings anchor it, and across its centre, where it rests on a narrow concrete block wall. The remainder of the structure is entirely suspended in the air. The building's vertiginous 9.2m cantilever alone makes it an outstanding piece of design, not to mention the hip interior, the amazing views and the atmosphere of complete tranquility between trees and sea.

Kay House Battery Point
Hobart may be a waterfront city where many homes have a glimpse of the blue, but when it comes to wide-water panoramas, this home in Battery Point is probably as good as it gets.
Once an unassuming brick cottage, this home has undergone a thorough makeover by architect Maria Gigney to bring in views that are nothing short of remarkable.
Entry to the home is through two ample jarrah doors, and here there are already mesmerising views of the Derwent. There's a cantilevered platform that extends out over the indoor lap pool and a glass-walled living area where it feels like one can almost touch the sea.
Materials include polished concrete, vitrified tiles, steel and glass, and the architect custom-designed much of the furniture too.

Elvio Brianese/DesignInc House Woodbridge
On a long waterfront block overlooking the D'Entrecasteaux Channel at Woodbridge is a serene, contemporary house that's among the most interesting new residential architecture in Tasmania.
This beautiful home -- with rooflines that soar towards the sun -- is made of two pavilions, linked by a central courtyard. The design is minimalist and yet the effect is daringly sophisticated.
This passive solar house has massive timber doors, polished concrete flooring and acres of glass to take in the views.
One of the best features is a double-sided fireplace straddling the courtyard and living room. This streamlined home proves that style is not about ostentation and that small -- and simple -- is beautiful.

Maria Gigney Sandy Bay House
Down by the water, where river begins to merge with sea, is one of the most exceptional works or architecture in Hobart.
The home, by architect Maria Gigney, is a cascading design over two levels. It's reminiscent of 1950s flat-roofed houses, like Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Water".
Timber-clad and neutral, it fits modestly within the seaside suburban landscape. The home sits lightly on the land and feels boat-like -- almost hovering above the sea -- with enormous amounts of glass.
There's a wet-edge plunge pool and glass-walled balconies to bring one even closer to the water and views. Custom-designed furniture and a neutral palette make this one of the coolest houses in town.

Government House, Hobart
Beautiful Government House on the Domain in Hobart is regarded as one of the best Vice-Regal residences in the Commonwealth. This neo-Gothic style early Victorian country house was designed by colonial architect William Pordon Kay and completed in 1857.
The sandstone for this stately home was quarried on site (the holes were made into ornamental pools) in the beautiful 15-hectare grounds and slate for the roof was imported from Wales.
Cedar and teak for the house were recycled from an old ship and much of the furniture was imported from London in the 1800s.
Apart from the conservatory, which was rebuilt to original designs in 1991, Government House remains as it was when it was first occupied.

Poppy Tauylor Dynnyrne House
On a steep block in Dynnyrne is a home with absolutely jaw-dropping views. This simple and sophisticated home has vistas stretching from the northern hills of Hobart to the far reaches of Storm Bay.
The home, by young architect Poppy Taylor, is a rectangular set of concrete slabs, built over two levels and partly cantilevered, with wide wraparound windows.
Outside, it's clad in vertical boards of salvaged celery top pine and inside there's recycled jarrah flooring and a gleaming red gum kitchen bench.
It's also environmentally smart: facing northeast, it has passive solar qualities that keep it cozy all day, winter and summer.
Stylish and understated, this home is one of Hobart's best.

King St Sandy Bay Home
This historic home is one of Hobart's landmarks, but before a recent major renovation, it was less than ideal to live in.
At the invitation of the owners, Peter Genders Construction went to work on it and, once he was finished, this 1890s home was once again truly among Tasmania's best.
The renovated home has a beautiful glass atrium in the living area, a smart new kitchen, a heated outdoor pool, new timber decks and there's even a separate guest studio with a contemporary look that is entirely sensitive to this heritage home.
The piece de resistance is the new wine cellar that was created out of the previous damp and unusable space under the home.
This grand old lady of King Street now shines again.

Woolley House, Bicheno
This home is one of the few in the state to have won the prestigious James Blackburn Triennial Award as well as the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Award.
Designed by Launceston architect Jack Birrell, of Birrelli Architects, this elegant, spacious house is set in rural coastal surroundings near Bicheno.
With century-old recycled timber beams from a disused railway bridge as one of the main elements of the design, the home has soaring windows to take in the remarkable views.
The house also has great environmental credentials including passive solar planning and detailing that also serves to create outside living areas protected from heavy coastal weather. Serene and beautifully designed.
