申请 07fall EE & optics& photonics
正在陶瓷，我会随时更新本帖，希望和大家交流经验
4月初的回信：
10分钟内居然收到两封回信，都是top学校的，让我感到受宠若惊。
一个是小秘回的：“We have just finished admitting all of the students for 2006. I am not sure of my openings for 2007. But feel free to apply.” 这封回信明明是个小秘，根本不是我套的教授，怎么能说 "i'm not sure of my openings for 07" 难道是搪塞？
另外一个是教授回的：“I am always looking for new qualified students to add to my lab. Please submit an application to our gradate program and clearly indicate on the
application that you are interested in studying in my group. I can then review your file to judge your qualifications.If you have any question in the special field of XXX, feel free to contact me,hope I can be helpful to you.
All the best in you studies”
Hi XX,
Thank you very much for your email and for your interest in my research group.
I cannot predict whether or not there will be openings for research assistants in my group in Fall 2007
Please feel free to contact me again later if you are still interested.

最近准备重考T，在家憋的闷，又套了一些教授，有如下回复：
Dear XX
Thank you for your interest in my research areas. I cannot guarantee any
position opening in Fall 2007, but I strongly encourage you to apply to our
department.

Hi: I would certainly encourage your application, though I can't make any commitments at this time. XX is just one of several projects going on here, though one I'm quite interested in. I would be interested in receiving any reports you may have.

Hi XX,
I'm interested in taking new students, always about 2 to 3 per year. However, you will have to get admitted first, and then correspond with me. Normally either I would take in the student if I'm happy with the past credentials, and if the student has his own funding, or in other cases, you will have to do an independent studies project with me for a quarter or two (during which time he would not fund you or give
you an RA), if I'm happy with you, I will certainly accept you into my group.
Recently the group is most active in two projects, one on XXXXX and the other on coheXXXXXX.

其他的客套话的回信就不列举在这了，个人感觉还是要从研究方向着手陶瓷效果比较好，首先
自己最好有一定的研究背景，哪怕是在实验室混过一段时间也行，找准方向陶瓷才能有的矢。
鬼子不回信也不要气馁，继续找其他的套，陶瓷就要在已确定研究方向的范围内广泛撒网，然
后重点捕捞。
教授现在的回信的说明不了太多问题，能最终拿到offer签证，申请才算是成功，希望大家一起
加油，坚持下去！
5T不理想，要准备考新托，郁闷郁闷~~~~都没时间准备申请文书了

这段时间一直没套，居然收到20天前套的一个教授的回信，也忒慢了点吧：

感觉和第一轮没什么区别.......估计等论文被正式接受后形势会有所改观

一个PhD candidate的回信，给我推荐了几个教授
Hi XX,
XX is a great place to do grad school, and I think with your drive to do research you stand a very good chance of getting in. That said, XXX is not very popular at XX right now. This is because the main people doing XXX research (XXr, XX, and XX) have all moved onto other projects. XX actually went so far as to move to XX to join their free-space optical group. The other professors strongest in XX, XX and XX are focused in other areas: Professor X has a bunch of very cool XX projects, while Professor XX is working on next-generation XX . While there may not be any active projects on XX right now, that should not stop you from applying. In fact, while you should highlight your background and accomplishments in the field in your application, you shouldn't decide right now what you are going to do your research on. I would recommend focusing on getting in first. To do that, make sure you have extremely strong letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose that focuses on your research experience. I'm sure your test scores will be good, but so are everybody else's that applies to XX. Your experience will help you stand out from the rest of the applicants. If however you really really want to continue in XXX, I would recommend XX over of XX -- the XXs group there is bigger and is more likely to need more grad students. If however you are open to other fields of subdisciplines, XX is an amazing place full of brilliant students and faculty. Good luck!

I regret that I cannot give you a more positive answer regarding a funded position.

一封positive陶瓷回信（硕士RA）

这几天忙实验，2天没开邮箱，今天发现了一封positive的回信：
Dear XX,
Thank you for your interest in working with me. To further understand your
strength and potential, I've included some publications that reflect the
current research focus of our research group.
Please go through the articles thoroughly and pick one(s) that particularly
interest you. For those, please do the following:
1. What is the motivation or context of the research documented?
2. What is new and innovative about the research?
3. If you were the researcher in this area, what would you propose for
future work, and why? Please provide an analysis in terms of approach and
feasibility.
Specifically, I'm looking for knowledge (your ability to dig deep into some
given technical area new to you), logical reasoning, and creativity. Any
evidence to demonstrate your experience in modeling and lab work will also
be appreciated. Repeating ideas already documented in these articles does
not demonstrate appreciation of the technology and research potential.
Thank you again for your interest in our research. We've one to two research
positions available next year, and I look forward to hearing from you.
