the people who send them. For this reason, I have decided to write this  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt

No "openings" in the usual sense: Many students appear to be send a form  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
letter to a large number of faculty without a much mention of any research  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
activities that are particular to a research group. In this case, I usually  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
discard the message. Even if the message is personalized, many seem to send  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
resume-style information in hopes that my research group has "openings" to  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
fill in the sense of a typical job. For some research groups, this might be  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
true; however, I usally do not operate this way. I usually do not offer  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
funding directly to students before I have been able to get to know them.  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
Thus, it is highly unlikely (although it happens once in a while to an  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
exceptional student) that I would offer a research assistantship before  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
getting to know a student well. I prefer that students take a course or two  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
from me, and that they have a chance to spend some time here. After a  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
semester or two, they can refine their interests and determine whether my  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
research area would be most exciting to them. I could also have the  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
opportunity to determine whether we are a suitable match in terms of  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
technical background, motivation, personality, etc.  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
—7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
GREs are worthless: With regard to sending resume-style information, it is  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
useless to report GRE scores to me; they are not a factor in any of my  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
decisions (general motivation for this can be found by reading The  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
Mismeasure of Man, by Stephen Jay Gould). I am less likely to respond to a  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
message that contains GRE scores.  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
—7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
My goals for students: I am very excited about the possibilty of working  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
with exceptional M.S./Ph.D. students. I intend to give strong personal  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
guidance that will maximize their chances of building a rewarding and  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
enjoyable career in research. Important goals that I have for students are:  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
1) the identification of fundamental research problems by developing a  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
thorough understanding of current literature; 2) the development of a  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
strong technical background that enables the proposal of independent and  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
innovative solutions to challenging problems; 3) the presentation and  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
publication of research in the most prestigious journals and conferences;  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
4) the development of personal communication and presentation skills that  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
are needed to maximize visibility in the research community, and increase  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
chances of future success. If you find this emphasis and my research area  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
appealing, I believe our group could provide you with a vibrant and  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt

How to possibly squeeze in: Admissions in the Dept. of Computer Science are  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
based on merit, and teaching assistantships or fellowships are usually  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
awarded to the admitted students. This is one of the best ways to come to  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
graduate school, and then spend time trying to find the right research  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
group. At present, my research group is pretty much full; however, I am  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
sometimes willing to make an exception. The ordinary path into my group is  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
to become a graduate student here and then take an upper-level course from  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
me. If there is strong mutual interest between me and a student, chances  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
are good she or he can start working in my group.  —7$©*}âtŠbbs.eduglobal.comքÄNfs_Lkt
